MAPW is proud to have members present and campaigning at a key UN conference to lead us closer to the abolition of nuclear weapons.
The second meeting of the States Parties to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is being held at the United Nations in New York from the 27th of November until December 1st. This is a week of high-level and civil-society events to tackle this urgent, existential threat.
This meeting brings together governments, scientists and campaigners from all over the world to build on this landmark treaty that comprehensively bans everything to do with nuclear weapons.
At the opening high-level session, the International Committee of the Red Cross noted that “nuclear weapons are not some mythical creation that stands above and beyond the law. The TPNW is proof that progress is possible even in the darkest of times.” The ICRC added that against the current looming backdrop, “we owe it to all the victims of past nuclear weapons use and testing, as well as to future generations, to keep moving toward a nuclear-weapon-free world.”
As the founder of the global campaign to establish the TPNW, we’re heartened by the engagement of over 100 countries and 400 civil society representatives in this meeting, and particularly welcome the Australian government again sending a delegation – headed up by Susan Templeman MP – to observe the meeting.
