IPCC Synthesis report omits Military Emissions

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change omits information on military emissions, citing need for better evidence.

The 2023 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Synthesis Report has omitted information about military emissions and their contribution to the climate crisis, citing the lack of data and absence of information about military emissions in previous IPCC reports.

Militaries are significant sources of emissions – but military emissions are not monitored or mandatorily reported. Without proper accounting for military emissions, it is less likely global temperature rise can be kept to 1.5 degrees as stipulated by the Paris Agreement.

Strong advocacy from the  World Office of the Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC), the Centre for International Environmental Law (CIEL), and the government of Ukraine for recognition of military emissions was noted by the IPCC, demonstrating the need for further coordinated action and input.
