In a letter addressed to Minister Wong dated December 22, 2023, MAPW expresses deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza caused by Israel’s actions. The virtual destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system, coupled with the disregard for international law, particularly in targeting medical facilities, is distressing for MAPW members.
While Australia supported a recent UN resolution for a humanitarian ceasefire, the letter calls for more significant action. It questions Australia’s complicity in Israel’s actions, citing potential violations of international obligations due to weapons exports under the Arms Trade Treaty and the Genocide Convention.
MAPW seeks information on the number of applications for weapon exports to Israel, advice from DFAT, emphasises the need for transparency, cessation of military exports to Israel, and addressing broader concerns about weapons sales to nations with human rights violations.
