Minister Wong: More decisive action is needed on Gaza

MAPW welcomes Australia's vote at the UN, but warns more action is needed to protect people in Gaza.

In a letter addressed to Minister Wong dated December 22, 2023, MAPW has expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza caused by Israel’s actions. The virtual destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system, coupled with the disregard for international law, particularly in targeting medical facilities, should prompt more decisive action from the Australian government.

While Australia supported a recent UN resolution for a humanitarian ceasefire, more significant action is needed. We  argue that Australia is complicit in Israel’s actions, including potential violations of international obligations under the Arms Trade Treaty and the Genocide Convention due to weapons exports.

MAPW has requested information on the number of applications for weapon exports to Israel, advice from DFAT, and emphasised the need for transparency, cessation of military exports to Israel, and to address broader concerns about weapons sales to nations with human rights violations.
