Mr John Menadue AO has had a very distinguished career in both the public and private sectors. He is currently Chair of the public interest think tank, Centre for Policy Development, which recently published the report titled, “A New Approach: Breaking the Stalemate on Refugee and Asylum Seekers”, a report which comprehensively critiques Australia’s refugee and asylum policies.
He has held many distinguished positions among which are: Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Ethinic Affairs, 1980-1983; Secretary of Prime Minister and Cabinet under Prime Ministers Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser; Ambassador to Japan and CEO of Qantas. He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1985 for public service. In 2003 he was awarded the Centenary Medal ‘for service to Australian society through public service leadership’. In 1997 he received the Japanese Imperial Award, the highest honour awarded to foreigners who are not head of state or head of government.
