Radio broadcaster Dr Norman Swann will open the exhibition ‘Artists for Peace’, mounted by the WA Branch of the Medical Association for the Prevention of War (MAPW), on 9 May at 6.30pm in Fremantle.
Twenty six prominent West Australian painters and sculptors including Robert Juniper, Evelyn Kotai, Leon Pericles, Nigel Hewitt, Naomi Grant, Joan Walsh-Smith, Galliano Fardin and Brian McKay are creating artworks on a theme of peace for a special exhibition to be held in Fremantle in May.
MAPW State Coordinator Prof. Peter Underwood said the group of committed doctors and health workers actively work against war because they recognise that the human community is at a crossroads.
“It is crucial to promote peaceful solutions to the key issues of our troubled world,” Prof. Underwood said. “The exhibition will draw on the capacity of our artists to generate dialogue and inspire us to build a more peaceful world.”
‘Artists for Peace’ will be open daily at the Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery, Henry Street, Fremantle, from 10 to 18 May 2008.
All artworks will be on sale, with part proceeds funding future peace initiatives including a medical project to relieve suffering in a war zone.
