The Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) will hold its third session from 28 April to 9 May 2025.
In 2025, the NPT is facing significant challenges as regional nuclear crises intensify, emerging technologies with dual-use capabilities create new proliferation pathways, and nuclear-armed states continue to fail to fulfil their disarmament obligations.
MAPW has written to Australia’s Foreign Minister to urge firm action at the PrepCom: since 2010, member states have failed to reach consensus on agreed outcomes and the treaty’s future direction.
Meanwhile, the broader arms control architecture is collapsing, with several bilateral arms control treaties cancelled, including the Antiballistic Missile Treaty, the Theatre Nuclear Forces in Europe Treaty, the Open Skies Agreement, and the Conventional Forces in Europe Agreement.
MAPW therefore urges the Foreign Minister to help revitalise nuclear non-proliferation through immediate accession to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).
