A new report from Pax for Peace examines trends in autonomy in weapons systems (artificial intelligence, automatic target recognition and swarming) and the questions they raise about how meaningful human control can be retained.
The report gives an introduction into new technologies, describes how militaries are deploying them, and examines the legal and moral dimensions of their use.
The report concludes that “new legal rules are needed to prevent legal and ethical norms from being eroded”, and sets out key principles for the establishment of a treaty.
