Anti nuclear groups applaud PM’s Hiroshima initiative: 9 June 2008

MAPW has congratulated Prime Minister Kevin Rudd for his announcement that Australia will set up a new international body to push for nuclear disarmament. President Dr Sue Wareham OAM, also an Australian Board Member of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, said that Mr Rudd should also be applauded for visiting Hiroshima – the first Australian Prime Minister to do so.

Iraq: Doctors report civilian casualties in US air strike - April 2008

Doctors for Iraq has received reports from the Imam Ali hospital in Sadar City, Baghdad, of dozens of civilian casualties following US military air strikes on the densely populated neighbourhood east of Baghdad.

Five days of intense fighting between the Mehdi army militia and the Iraqi military in early April left hospitals in Iraq overwhelmed with the number of casualties. Doctors for Iraq's network across the country reported that hospitals were lacking many medical supplies and resources to treat the injured.

MAPW deplores the recommendation of the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade not to support a ban on cluster munitions, adding that the this flies in the face of growing international concern of the terrible humanitarian costs of these weapons.
