MAPW media release: Doctors slam uranium miner over junk science on radiation safety - 1 May 2012
Announcing a statement signed by 45 medical doctors calling on uranium mining company Toro Energy to stop promoting the view that low-level radiation is beneficial to human health. Toro Energy, which plans to mine uranium at Wiluna in WA and has interests in uranium exploration ventures in the NT and SA, has sponsored speaking tours by controversial Canadian scientist Doug Boreham. The release notes that recent research has heightened rather than reduced concern about adverse health impacts of low-level radiation.
Doctors slam uranium miner over junk science on radiation safety: Statement issued by MAPW, 1 May 2012
The Medical Association for Prevention of War has released a statement signed by 45 medical doctors calling on uranium mining company Toro Energy to stop promoting the view that low-level radiation is beneficial to human health. Toro Energy, which plans to mine uranium at Wiluna in WA and has interests in uranium exploration ventures in the NT and SA, has sponsored speaking tours by controversial Canadian scientist Doug Boreham. The joint statement notes that recent research has heightened rather than reduced concern about the adverse health impacts of low-level radiation.
Uranium and health: Speech given by Dr Jenny Grounds, President of MAPW, September 2011
Uranium and health: the medical perspective is the text of a speech given by Dr Jenny Grounds at the "Uranium and poetry of peace" seminar held at Moores Gallery, Fremantle, Western Australia on 25 September, 2011. The speech covered the areas of basic uranium science, the effects of radiation on living tissue, exposure to ionising radiation and Australia's nuclear weapons dump proposal.
MAPW National Newsletter Autumn 2011
MAPW newsletter as mailed to members. This edition has feature articles on radiation hazards, and on the health risks created by the nuclear reactor crises at Fukushima, and 25 years ago at Chernobyl. 8-page A4. April 2011.
5.18 MBMAPW media release: Medical specialists urge full information on Japan health risks, 17 March 2011
This MAPW media release laments the lack of accurate information about the continuing nuclear crisis in Japan with the Australian government advising its citizens to evacuate 80 km from Fukushima, after reassurances the previous day that the 30km Japanese evacuation zone was adequate. MAPW notes that the lack of detailed data has already led to mischievous claims from industry representatives that people are at no risk. Equally disturbing has been the trend in some official statements trivialising the risks associated with lower level exposures.

Uranium Awareness Roadshow report: MAPW, ACF 2010
The ACFi and MAPW organised a speaking tour of remote communities in the Kimberly area of Western Australia in July, 2010. This booklet provides details and pictures of the tour. MAPW President Bill Williams gave remote communities an overview of the hazards of radiation and uranium mining. The MAPW Peace Fund supported ACFi in funding the tour.
MAPW fact sheet: Nuclear medicine
This MAPW fact sheet describes how nuclear medicine is used for diagnosis and radiotherapy treatment. It explains what is NOT nuclear medicine (eg x-rays and CT scans). It summarises the dangers of ionising radiation. It debunks two myths: that Australia needs a nuclear reactor to produce radioisotopes (materials for nuclear medicine); and that we need a radioactive waste dump for its waste. Written July 2010.
MAPW Victorian dinner: Radiation regulation in Sweden and Australia
Flyer for MAPW Victorian Branch dinner, Tuesday 10 August 2010. Guest speaker Carl-Magnus Larsson, new CEO of ARPANSAi, Australia's nuclear regulatory body.
MAPW briefing paper: nuclear power and public health. May 2010
A comprehensive briefing paper on nuclear power and public health, written by Dr Peter Karamoskos MBBS, FRANZCR and initially published online by the Evatt Foundation. This 20-page downloadable version includes full references. The paper discusses evidence regarding both occupational health issues for nuclear industry workers, and broader public health issues. It considers risks of nuclear power reactors and looks more broadly at the nuclear industry, including nuclear waste.
MAPW Fact Sheet: Radiation, 2010
A basic fact sheet on radiation and health, including an explanation of "safe" levels of radiation and a brief discussion of health implications of the nuclear industry.
Radiation and health: Energyscience fact sheet November 2006
This comprehensive fact sheet on radiation and health was written by MAPW's Dr Bill Williams, assisted by Dr Peter Karamoskos, for the energyscience website.
MAPW fact sheet: Nuclear power and childhood leukaemia. October 2008
New evidence clearly demonstrates that living close to a nuclear power station increases the risk for children of developing leukaemia. MAPW's fact sheet summarises and provides the major references - a recent German study, and a new meta-analysis - on childhood leukaemia and nuclear power. (Or childhood leukemia, so this is found by US spellers).
NZ nuclear veterans' long term chromosome damage: Rowland 2008
"Elevated chromosome translocation frequencies in New Zealand nuclear test veterans", by Associate Professor Al Rowland and other Massey University researchers, is a significant study documenting health effects for NZ sailors who witnessed Britain's Grapple nuclear tests at Christmas Island in the 1950s. The study details evidence of long term genetic damage, of a type linked to the presence of a wide range of illnesses and with the potential to result in intergenerational effects Published in the leading international peer-reviewed scientific journal "International Cytogenetics and Genome Research".
