MAPW Policy: Radioactive Waste - revised February 2012
MAPW revised its nuclear waste policy in 2012. The three-page Radioactive Waste Policy - revised February 2012 - begins by stating that reduction at source (waste minimisation) is the fundamental principle in reducing the risks of environmental contamination from nuclear waste. A detailed preamble discusses the burden of nuclear waste in Australia and the problems faced in safely disposing of it.
Muckaty: dumping on the territory. Dr.Peter Karamoskos. December 2011.

The article, printed in the Northern Territory News on Saturday 10 December 2011, was written in response to an editorial in that paper repeating the assertion that the radioactive waste to be stored will be largely nuclear medicine waste.
MAPW Fact Sheet: Muckaty Basics - December 2011
This MAPW fact sheet discusses the proposal to store and dispose of nuclear waste on Aboriginal land at Muckaty in the Northern Territory. It describes the type of waste, and what is planned for burial or above-ground storage. It debunks the myth that a radioactive waste dump is needed for nuclear medicine waste. This plain-English fact sheet is adapted from our 4-page Muckaty Q&A fact sheet.
MAPW Fact Sheet: Transport of radioactive waste to Muckaty - November 2011
Outlines the risks to humans and the environment, of transporting radioactive waste by truck, to remote outback Northern Territory, where it is proposed that there should be a nuclear waste dump at Muckaty, near Tennant Creek. Fact sheet prepared by MAPW's Northern Territory Branch.
MAPW fact sheet: Nuclear waste Q & A, November 2011
MAPW fact sheet written by Dr Peter Karamoskos on the nature of the radioactive waste to be deposited at the proposed nuclear waste dump at Muckaty Station. This four page fact sheet debunks the myth that a central radioactive waste repository is needed for nuclear medicine. It also explains plans for two different levels of waste, and explains that more hazardous waste would be stored, rather than permanently disposed of by burial.

Uranium and health: the medical perspective is the text of a speech given by Dr Jenny Grounds at the "Uranium and poetry of peace" seminar held at Moores Gallery, Fremantle, Western Australia on 25 September, 2011. The speech covered the areas of basic uranium science, the effects of radiation on living tissue, exposure to ionising radiation and Australia's nuclear weapons dump proposal.
Public forum on NT nuclear waste dump
Flyer for a public forum to be held in Darwin on 12 September 2011 explaining why waste produced by nuclear medicine does not justify the proposed NT waste dump.

Joint statement on Nuclear Medicine in Australia
This 2-page statement has been developed by the NT Branch of MAPW and partners. It asks for an inquiry into radioisotope production and nuclear medicine waste disposal prior to the construction of any radioactive waste dump in Australia. It notes concerns within the Australian community and amongst health professionals and scientific experts regarding current research reactor based production and the Commonwealth Government’s position regarding the disposal of these radioisotopes. The statement has been signed by MAPW, the Public Health Association Australia, Doctors for the Environment Australia, the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Federation (SA) and the Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance (NT)

5.18 MBNuclear projections look shaky after Fukushima: Nic Maclellan
In recent years, concern over climate change and the environmental impact of coal-fired plants has spurred renewed interest in generating electricity from nuclear power. But nuclear industry projections for new reactor construction were looking shaky even before the post-tsunami nuclear crisis in Japan. Article by researcher Nic Maclellan: March 2011
32.04 KB application/pdfDoctors explode Ferguson's nuclear myths: MAPW media release
MAPW media release stating that the argument Australia needs a radioactive dump in the NT to continue supply of nuclear medicine is “malignant”, and deploring the use of this argument by politicians to mislead the public during the parliamentary debate on the National Radioactive Waste Management Bill. If passed, the bill would see Muckaty, 120km north of Tennant Creek, as the only site initially assessed for the proposed nuclear waste dump.
MAPW fact sheet: Nuclear medicine
This MAPW fact sheet describes how nuclear medicine is used for diagnosis and radiotherapy treatment. It explains what is NOT nuclear medicine (eg x-rays and CT scans). It summarises the dangers of ionising radiation. It debunks two myths: that Australia needs a nuclear reactor to produce radioisotopes (materials for nuclear medicine); and that we need a radioactive waste dump for its waste. Written July 2010.
MAPW briefing paper: nuclear power and public health. May 2010
A comprehensive briefing paper on nuclear power and public health, written by Dr Peter Karamoskos MBBS, FRANZCR and initially published online by the Evatt Foundation. This 20-page downloadable version includes full references. The paper discusses evidence regarding both occupational health issues for nuclear industry workers, and broader public health issues. It considers risks of nuclear power reactors and looks more broadly at the nuclear industry, including nuclear waste.
