5.18 MBNuclear projections look shaky after Fukushima: Nic Maclellan
In recent years, concern over climate change and the environmental impact of coal-fired plants has spurred renewed interest in generating electricity from nuclear power. But nuclear industry projections for new reactor construction were looking shaky even before the post-tsunami nuclear crisis in Japan. Article by researcher Nic Maclellan: March 2011

Text of presentation by Dr Sue Wareham OAM given at a Forum organised by Christians for an Ethical Society in Canberra, on 24 March 2011. The topic - health and other risks of the nuclear industry; and in particular the safety record of nuclear power; was unfortunately made more relevant by the destruction of Japan's Fukushima reactors by the tsunami and earthquake on 11 March and the subsequent nuclear crisis. 8pp: please contact MAPW for references or any queries.

This MAPW media release laments the lack of accurate information about the continuing nuclear crisis in Japan with the Australian government advising its citizens to evacuate 80 km from Fukushima, after reassurances the previous day that the 30km Japanese evacuation zone was adequate. MAPW notes that the lack of detailed data has already led to mischievous claims from industry representatives that people are at no risk. Equally disturbing has been the trend in some official statements trivialising the risks associated with lower level exposures.

Eliminating Nuclear Weapons: May 2009
28 MAY 2009. Former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser addresses the National Consultative Committee on Disarmament Conference in Wellington. Mr Fraser spoke about the continous threat of nuclear possession and noted that we cannot divide nuclear weapons into those for use and those for deterence. Negotiating a Nuclear Weapons Convention would bring together all the neccessary aspects of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and the time is right for complete abolition.
