Why Australians should be prosecuted for war crimes in Iraq: Tim Wright, 2009
This article by Tim Wright (first published in the Alternative Law Journal, Volume 34, No.3, 2009) assesses whether there is a legal and factual basis for the International Criminal Court to investigate and prosecute Australian leaders and soldiers for war crimes committed in Iraq. It looks primarily at the participation of Australian armed forces in indiscriminate cluster bomb strikes and the second assault on Fallujah in 2004. While the evidence supporting action by the permanent court is strong, there appears to be little political will to put any western nationals on trial.
MAPW media release: Australian troops must obey international law - February 2012
The Medical Association for Prevention of War (Australia) (MAPW) has issued a media release expressing concern at evidence that Australia deliberately tried to avoid its human rights obligations under the Geneva Convention in Iraq and Afghanistan. MAPW supports the call for a Royal Commission made by the Public Interest Advocacy Centre who have obtained information through Freedom of Information on the operations of the Australian Defence force, including the SAS.

Australia’s biggest current defence deployment is to Afghanistan. Yet in early August 2010, neither of the two major political parties in Australia had released their official foreign affairs policies, or made any clear statement regarding Australia’s military contribution in Afghanistan and our future involvement in the Afghanistan war. Only the Greens have a clear policy (to withdraw Australian troops).This 5 August 2010 MAPW document summarises statements since late June, and appends a list of sources. (see also our news story).

War is an obscenity: Sir William Refshauge, 1991
Sir William Refshauge wrote this article for MAPW's newsletter, 'Pulse' in February 1991, at the time of the first Gulf War. He argues that war is an obscenity and puts a strong case for supporting the role of the United Nations. Whilst dismissing "peace at any price", Sir William notes the human and ecological consequences of war.

MAPW calls for end to Israel’s Gaza blockade: Media release, 4 December 2008
The Medical Association for Prevention of War has called on the Australian Government to help secure an end to the Israeli Government’s crippling blockade of Gaza. MAPW President Dr Sue Wareham OAM says that the blockade is a clear violation of the Geneva Conventions, and prevents essential food and aid from reaching residents.

Doctors for Iraq has received reports from the Imam Ali hospital in Sadar City, Baghdad, of dozens of civilian casualties following US military air strikes on the densely populated neighbourhood east of Baghdad.
