Drones are UAVs, or unmanned aerial vehicles, which carry missiles and are controlled remotely. They are widely deployed in Afghanistan and have recently been used in the aerial bombardment of Lybia. This fact sheet outlines the various concerns which surround the use of robots in warfare.

Australia’s biggest current defence deployment is to Afghanistan. Yet in early August 2010, neither of the two major political parties in Australia had released their official foreign affairs policies, or made any clear statement regarding Australia’s military contribution in Afghanistan and our future involvement in the Afghanistan war. Only the Greens have a clear policy (to withdraw Australian troops).This 5 August 2010 MAPW document summarises statements since late June, and appends a list of sources. (see also our news story).

Advertisement published in the Western Australian newspaper 3 March 2010. Authorised by MAPW. Funded by a donation in memory of "Reverend Keith Dowding and all who seek peace". The advertisement notes the financial and human costs of the Afghanistan war, and calls on Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith to bring Australian troops home.
MAPW letter to Minister of Defence : 'Australian troops in Afghanistan', November 2009
Letter from MAPW President Dr Bill Williams to Australian Minister for Defence Senator John Faulkner congratulating the Minister for not committing additional Australian troops to Afghanistan. The letter outlines the costs of the war in terms of human security and gives MAPW suggestions for building towards a consensus for regional peace in Afghanistan.

This full-page advertisement in the Western Australian on 11/11/2008 (Armistice Day) was developed by MAPW's WA Branch, and former Premier Peter Dowding. It questions Australia's spending on overseas wars, in particular Afghanistan, and calls for our troops to be brough home. It would also make a fine poster.
