2008 Defence White Paper: MAPW submission

MAPW Media Release: Doctors applaud withholding uranium from Russia
18 September 2008: MAPW welcomes the recommendations by Australian government's Joint Standing Committee on Treaties, that Australia does not proceed with uranium sales to Russia until far more stringent measures are in place to separate Russia's civilian and military nuclear facilities.

MAPW-ACF 2008: Nuclear warfare threats should end plans to sell Australian uranium to Russia
MAPW and the Australian Conservation Foundation say the current conflict in Georgia, with the renewed threat of the use of nuclear weapons, provides another reason why Australia should scrap plans to sell uranium to Russia. Dr Sue Wareham, President of the Medical Association for the Prevention of War (Australia) was invited to address the Australian Government's Joint Standing Committee enquiring into the proposed sale of Australian uranium to Russia, on Monday 25 August 2008.

Anti nuclear groups applaud PM’s Hiroshima initiative: 9 June 2008
MAPW has congratulated Prime Minister Kevin Rudd for his announcement that Australia will set up a new international body to push for nuclear disarmament. President Dr Sue Wareham OAM, also an Australian Board Member of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, said that Mr Rudd should also be applauded for visiting Hiroshima – the first Australian Prime Minister to do so. Dr Wareham and others are available for comment.
NPT PrepCom: ICAN report, 2008
Tim Wright attended the nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty Preparatory Committee Meeting in Geneva in May 2008 on behalf of ICANi. MAPW Immediate Past President Tilman Ruff, with Yarra Councillor Jenny Farrar, were NGOi representatives on the official Australian delegation. This ICAN report describes both the official meeting, including Australia's role; and the unofficial campaign meetings and workshops of anti-nuclear NGOs which accompanied it.

How well can the IAEA safeguard existing civilian nuclear energy facilities against the threat of nuclear proliferation? How sound are the agency's inspection efforts to prevent the possible diversions of fresh and spent fuel rods from reactors and of nuclear materials directly useable to make bombs from nuclear fuel making plants? A new NPECi report identifies the IAEA safeguards system's key structural and operational deficiencies and pinpoints where additional funding would strengthen IAEA safeguards and where it would not; and gives detailed recommendations to make the IAEA safeguards system more credible and effective. Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and US withdrawal. IPPNW - 2002
The USA officially withdrew from the Anti Ballistic Missile (ABMi) Treaty on 13 June 2002.
This talking paper from IPPNWi states that this simply creates an unnecessary risk and won't get the US any closer to a working National Missile Defence System.
The ABM Treaty does not keep the United States from continuing to research and test a missile defence system. In fact, the biggest impediments to a national missile defence system are unproven technologies and cost, not the ABM Treaty.

Proliferation dangers associated with nuclear medicine (HEU). MAPW - 2008
The near-universal use of weapons-grade, highly enriched uranium (HEUi) to produce radiopharmaceuticals used in medicine, is a significant hazard. This peer-reviewed paper argues that health professionals should stop the use of HEU in medicine, as a vulnerable pathway to creating a 'terrorist bomb'. Produced by MAPW doctors Bill Williams and Tilman Ruff, it was published in 2008.
