ICAN media release: Government urged to act on nuclear treaty - September 2009
17 September 2009 ICANi media release following the tabling of the report of the Joint Standing Committe on Treaties, on Australia's nuclear treaties. The release quotes Dimity Hawkinds and MAPW's Bill Williams and Sue Wareham, as welcoming recommendations that the government support a Nuclear Weapons Convention, and play a leading role in working for nuclear disarmament.

Kawasaki Akira is one of two NGOi Advisors to the Co-Chairs of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (ICNNDi). Kelvin Thomson MP addresses MAPW Council on nuclear treaties: August 2009
Kelvin Thomson MP chairs the Australian Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on Treaties (JSCOT), which is currently undertaking an broad-ranging inquiry into Australia’s nuclear treaties. Mr Thomson addressed MAPW's National Council on 29 August 2009. He discussed progress towards nuclear disarmament, including many of the international treaties being considered by the parliamentary enquiry.

MAPW 2009 Hiroshima Day poster
US Forces dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima at 8.15am on 6 August 1945, immediately killing 85000 people. This was the first time a nuclear weapon was used in war. This simple MAPW poster is suitable to use for 2009 Hiroshima Day displays.

MAPW Fact Sheet: Nuclear ship visits to Australia
This two-page fact sheet covers the history of nuclear powered and nuclear-armed ships to Australia, as well as detailing the hazards to health and to the environment which nuclear ship visits bring. The fact sheet lists examples of nuclear incidents, both accidental and intentional, involving nuclear weapons; and nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed vessels — both surface ships and submarines. MAPW response, Community Consultation report, Defence White Paper: updated June 2009
MAPW took seriously the offer to participated in the Defence Department's Community Consultation leading up to the 2009 Defence White Paper. Our members developed a considered and well-researched MAPW submission; and attended local community meetings. The report, released on 15 April 2009, just ahead of the White Paper and budget , higlights the views of the military and weapons industry while dismissing or downplaying views and evidence suggesting decreased spending, or promoting peace-making and diplomatic resolution of conflict. Our response has been updated after analysing submissions, and following questions in the Senate.
