Public forum to voice your opinion on Defence
Community organisations and individuals interested in the direction of Australia’s defence policy will have an opportunity to present their views. MAPW and the Nautilus Institute (RMIT) are organising a Public Forum following widespread disappointment in the community consultation preceding the Defence White Paper, where submissions advocating non-military solutions to conflict appear to have been ignored.
The public forum will discuss the White Paper and the Federal Budget. Participants will discuss how the White Paper will shape Australia’s future relationships with the world, and with our Pacific region; and whether the government is making a serious contribution to abolishing nuclear weapons.
Professor Richard Tanter from the Nautilus Institute will be covering the overall framework of the White Paper. ICANi’s Dimity Hawkins will touch on the subject of nuclear abolition while Nic Maclellan will be talking about policing the Pacific.
The forum will be held on Thursday 11 June, starting at 6pm and run for an hour and a half, at level 2 of the Alan Gilbert Building (cnr Barry and Grattan St, Carlton). See Events" for more details and a flier.
