Nuclear weapons, nuclear industry: MAPW documents health risks

MAPW has just released two excellent new publications which document the health and environmental risks of nuclear weapons; and the health risks of the nuclear industry.

  •  Zero is the only option: Four Medical and Environmental Cases for the Eradication of Nuclear Weapons is a major briefing paper on the global climate and health effects of nuclear war. Produced by IPPNWi for the 2010 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, it documents four case studies and draws extensively from the work of climate scientists at Rutgers University and the University of Colorado at Boulder, including Alan Robock, O. B. Toon, Michael Mills, and their colleagues, who have documented the climate effects of regional war. Available from the nuclear-zero blogsite.
  • Nuclear power and public health is a new MAPW briefing paper written by Dr Peter Karamoskos MBBS, FRANZCR and initially published online by the Evatt Foundation. This 20-page downloadable version includes full references. The paper discusses evidence regarding both occupational health issues for nuclear industry workers, and broader public health issues. It considers risks of nuclear power reactors and looks more broadly at the nuclear industry, including nuclear waste. Read or download here
