MAPW submission on extension of nuclear treaty

MAPW has made a submission to the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties in regard to the proposed extension of the 1987 Regional Co-operative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology.

The Treaty, first signed in 1987, covers a nuclear research and development agreement between Australia and fourteen other Asian countries.

The submission protests against the signing of such a treaty with any state, as the majority of nuclear weapons programmes have risen from "peaceful" nuclear power production.

MAPW finds it particularly inappropriate to have such an agreement with nuclear weapon states, especially those which, like India and Pakistan, have failed to sign the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.
