MAPW raises Sri Lankan human rights with PM

MAPW President Dr Bill Williams wrote to to Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on July 1 to congratulate the Australian Senate on its recent resolution regarding the investigation of alleged human rights abuses during the final stages of Sri Lanka's civil war in 2009. The letter also requested the removal of the suspension on processing of Sri Lankan asylum seekers: fortunately now implemented by the government.Other requests made of the Government in the letter included requesting the United Nations to consider prosecuting Sri Lankan forces for war crimes. Similar letters have been written to the Government by other bodies and individuals, including the Australian of the Year Professor Patrick McGorry.
