18th World Congress ends

NEW DELHI, WEDNESDAY. The 18th World Congress of the International Physicians for Prevention of War concluded on Tuesday; the newly elected Board met on Wednesday. The Congress had a record attendance of over 600, half of whom were students or young doctors. A delegation from the Congress was able to meet the President of India; the Vice President and Minister for Health both addressed the Congress.

The Congress focused in particular on IPPNWi's International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. The limitation of small arms was another major theme. A particularly moving session on the disastrous health effects on locals of the Jadugoda uranium mine, in northern India; with reports from both doctors and a village representative.

While in Delhi, MAPW President Sue Wareham and other Australians visited and expressed support students from India's Kerala state, on a hunger strike to protest against the proposed US-India deail for assistance with nuclear power for India.
