What is Happening at Pine Gap? seminar by Prof. Richard Tanter

Event Date:

Room 224, Melbourne Law School, 185 Pelham Street, Carlton
The Nuclear Weapons Study Circle presents a seminar by Prof. Richard Tanter from the Nautilus Institute. The Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap is the most secretive military or intelligence facility in Australia, and the most important US intelligence base outside the United States itself. The base has expanded greatly in recent years, and its two separate space-related functions – with signals intelligence satellites and missile early warning and missile de-fence satellites – have expanded enormously. Edward Snowden has made clear the deep interconnections between US and Australian intelligence through Pine Gap. The base remains a priority nuclear target in the event of global conflict between the United States and China.

  • What does Pine Gap actually do?
  • Why is it growing?
  • How does it connect to nuclear war?
  • How does it connect to US drone assassinations?
  • How “joint” is the Joint Facility?
  • Does Pine Gap enhance or detract from Australian security?
