MAPW Victorian Branch bimonthly briefing: Report back from Geneva NPTi meeting

  • Our special guest on 8 July will be Senator Lyn Allison. We will be honouring her work for peace, and she will offer some insights to us on working for peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons, in the parliamentary system.
  • The PM's recent announcment, that the Australia would set up an international Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Commission, makes this meeting even more timely.

MAPW Vice-President Associate Professor Tilman Ruff with Yarra Councillor Jenny Farrar will report back on a nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty meeting they attended in Geneva in early May - the NPT PrepCom - as NGOi resentatives on the official Australian delegation.

Australia for the first time raised issues highlighted by MAPW, including a nuclear weapons convention, and concerns regarding the use of highly enriched uranium (HEUi) in production of radiopharmaceuticals.

This meeting offers an update on the state of international and UNi-level moves to abolish nuclear weapons; insights into the role that non-governmental organisations can play; and a chance to discuss the role of the new Commission. See also the report from ICAN representative Tim Wright.
