Neuroscience and social change: are we rational beings? was the title of the talk given by Professor Fred Mendelsohn AO, at the MAPW Annual National Council dinner on 20 August 2009. Professor Mendelsohn discussed the complexity of the human brain; the contrast between our extraordinary scientific achievements and our stupidity in wars; the role of empathy and of emotion; and implications of our understanding of the human brain for our campaign for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
