These brief summary notes were prepared by MAPW Executive members after Professor Louise Newman spoke at a July 2012 MAPW Victorian Branch dinner. They are designed to help members wishing to write letters to the media on this topic.

Nuclear weapons, nuclear industry, environment, human costs of war

Dr Beavis is committed to the abolition of nuclear weapons, and the end of the hazardous nuclear industy. Her concerns for the human costs of war have led her to work as a volunteer GP with Melbourne's Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. She also has a particular interest in health and the environment, both on a global scale, and in her local community.

Photographic exhibition: Unsafe haven

An exhibition of photographs taken in the Hazarajat regions of Afghinastan by youth worker, freelance writer and former refugee  Abdul Kerim Hekmat. The exhibition gives insight into the plight of the Hazara and challenges the view that Afghan asylum seekers are no longer in need of protection.

MAPW urges humanitarian treatment of Sri Lankan Asylum Seekers

MAPW President Bill Williams has written a letter to Immigration Minister Chris Evans, urging that Australia’s response to Sri Lankan asylum seekers be humanitarian, and in accordance with international human rights law.
