NT Branch
The Northern Territory Branch is involved with local nuclear issues, many of which relate to Aboriginal people. The NT Branch provides submissions on relevant issues, including the need for planning for radiological emergencies, impacts of uranium mining, and proposals for a nuclear waste dump in the Territory. The NT Branch has highlighted the excess risk and costs that Aboriginal people suffer from the nuclear industry, compared with other Australians.
The NT Branch has raised concerns and worked on MAPW policy regarding the Joint US Defence Facility at Pine Gap. With existing and potential uranium mines, the Pine Gap base, and a history of nuclear weapons testing, nuclear issues have a particular relevance in the Northern Territory.
Most NT MAPW members are in Alice Springs; but members live and work throughout NT. Since medical students represent a significant proportion of NT members, contact from students undertaking rotations in NT is very welcome.
